【主题】Promoting EMI teacher development in higher education contexts:Challenges and recommendations

Abstract ：The use of English as a medium of instruction (EMI) has increasingly become a norm in higher education settings across the globe. Yet, in many educational contexts where English is used as a foreign language (EFL), a number of university teachers, as non-native English speakers, often feel ill-prepared and under-supported in EMI teaching. This seminar covers important issues in EMI teacher development. First, the emotional, pedagogical and social barriers faced by university EMI teachers in China will be outlined and analyzed. After that,an EMI teacher development framework will be proposed to delineate the need to foster a sense of ownership of English as a global language, develop effective classroom language, and cultivate discipline-specific pedagogical competence in a community of practice. Based on the framework, implications for effective design and implementation of EMI teacher education programs in EFL higher education settings will also be presented.

Rui Yuan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English Language Education at The Education University of Hong Kong. His research interests include teacher development and teacher educators in higher education. His publications have appeared in over 20 SSCI journals.
